Krekelsparen

Krekelsparen? What is that?

  • Your money does not go to controversial practices such as the arms industry, environmental destruction, child labour, or other human rights abuses.
  • Your money is reinvested in projects with a benefit for people, society and the environment.
  • The interest rate is not less than with traditional bank accounts.

Solidarity aspect

  • There is also a solidarity aspect to Krekelsparen. Netwerk Vlaanderen is the privileged partner of Krekelsparen and receives an annual commission from Fortis Bank. This commission allows Netwerk to promote sustainable banking.
  • You can also choose to give part of the commission that Fortis receives to another organization of your choice. Around 200 organisations receive an annual income from Krekelsparen

Organisations and Krekelsparen

When you open a Krekelsparen account, you can indicate an organisation as beneficiary from the Krekelsparen list. These organizations receive an annual income via the Krekelsparen. If your organisation would like to join the Krekelsparen, you can find more information here about the way that this scheme works: Krekelsparen Information for organisations (only in Dutch available).

Interest

You can also make a contribution by giving up (part of) your interest to one of these organizations, or Netwerk. Giving up more than 30 euros interest per year in favour of an organisation in Belgium can be tax deductible. The organization can inform you whether it is recognized by the government to allow donations it receives to be tax deductible.

Krekelsparen in figures

Krekelsparen has existed since 1984. At the moment, there are almost  9000 Krekelsparen accounts. In total, this accounts for around 70 million euro in savings that are being reinvested in a sustainable manner. Take a look at the evolution of Krekelsparen.pdf

Independent control

Ethibel conducts an annual control of the reinvestment of the money, and gives a Ethibel certificate. The introduction to the Krekelsparen product gives more information about the sustainability criteria, the control, the solidarity aspect, the transparency and the possibility for consultation.
